Famine Declared in South Sudan by UN

South Sudan has had an ethnic conflict going on for the last three years. NGOs and the United Food Programme state that 100,000 people are close to starvation. Estimates show that close to 5 million people are in urgent need of food. This constitutes 40% of the nation’s population.
1.5 million people have become refugees due to the ongoing conflict which has no signs of ending. Without funds, officials expect the food may run out by June.
