Congressional Democrats criticized President Donald Trump over a CNN report that the FBI rejected a White House request to publicly condemn a NY Times article regarding communications between Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the presidential campaign. CNN reported Chief of Staff Reince Priebus had requested the condemnation after FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe told Priebus some of the coverage was inaccurate. The FBI has not made a public statement condemning the reporting.
The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations. The White House initially disputed that account, but a White House official later corrected their version of events to confirm what the law enforcement official described.
