Samsung’s Chief to Be Indicted on Bribery Charges

Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung, was indicted on charges of bribery, embezzlement, hiding assets overseas and perjury on Tuesday. The bribery scandal is the same one that led to the impeachment of South Korean president Park Geun-hye.

Samsung is suspected of bribing Park and Choi Soon-sil, a friend of Park’s for 40 years, for the support of the government during a 2015 merger deal between two Samsung affiliates. Several other Samsung officials were charged and have since resigned.
