A judge approved a $27 million settlement in a case Thursday involving the rideshare company, Lyft, and its drivers. Lyft drivers in California sued the company in 2013, alleging misclassification of their employment status. All Lyft drivers are classified as Independent Contractors. Independent Contractors are required to pay for all job tools, which in this case includes vehicles, fuel, and maintenance. The settlement agreement does not affect Lyft’s classification of their drivers, who will remain Independent Contractors for now. This settlement will lead to thousands of dollars for drivers who logged the most miles, while more infrequent drivers will receive much less.
