The Social Democrat Party of Germany (SPD) have voted to elect Martin Schulz as head of the party with 100 percent of the valid votes cast. This means that Schulz will be the leading challenger to current Chancellor Angela Merkel during the election on September 24. Schulz was a former president at the European Parliament.
In his speech to party members, Schulz promised to defend the working man and women and to ensure social justice for all. He also promised to fight populism in Germany if elected.
