Tuesday’s Supreme Court Confirmation Hearing for Gorsuch

Tuesday was the second of four Senate confirmation hearings for Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court Justice. Gorsuch was questioned about his views on past Supreme Court cases, particularly Roe v. Wade. Gorsuch responded that Supreme Court precedents deserve respect. Senator Graham asked Gorsuch how he would respond if President Trump were to ask for the Roe v. Wade decision to be overturned. Gorsuch reiterated his independence from the president in his decision making, including that he would have “walked out the door” if he were asked to do so.

Gorsuch was also questioned about claims made by a former student. The student claimed that during a legal ethics class, Gorsuch said that “many” women lawyers lie about whether they plan to have children to abuse maternity benefits. During the hearing, Gorsuch claimed he was attempting to make the opposing point, that women are often asked ‘inappropriate’ questions in a professional context.
