A new restriction on electronics prevents passengers from bringing any device larger than a cell phone into the airplane cabin. The US has imposed this restriction on direct flights from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The UK has placed similar restrictions affecting direct flights from six countries including Tunisia and Lebanon which are not on the US list. The regulation comes after claims of an al Qaeda affiliate perfecting techniques to put bombs inside of batteries and battery compartments.
Technology experts are concerned that placing the batteries in the cargo hold creates more of a risk due to fire. The fire suppression systems in the hold of the plane are ineffective against metal fires. This is why cargo shipments of lithium-ion batteries are banned from passenger planes.
