Scotland’s Parliament Votes for First Minister to Begin Negotiations for Independence Vote

The Scottish Parliament voted to give the First Minister the power to negotiate an independence referendum in 2019. The independence vote would need to be granted and approved by the UK Parliament. Prime Minister May has signaled that she will not allow a second referendum in the near future.

Scotland voted to remain in the United Kingdom shortly before the Brexit vote took place. Ireland and Scotland, however, largely voted to remain in the European Union prompting calls for a second independence referendum.
