This Day in History - Abigail Adams Urges Her Husband to “Remember the Ladies”

In a letter dated, March 31, 1776, Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, asked him to make sure that the Continental Congress considered the rights of women. Nearly 150 year prior to the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which gave women equal voting rights, Adams was vocal to her husband about the treatment of women under the new laws that would be created. The letter reads: “And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” John and Abigail Adams have been referred to as “America’s first power couple”.
