Microcephaly and other Zika Related Birth Defects More Likely for Mothers with Zika

Microcephaly, a disease in which the brain does not fully grow, is 33 times more likely to occur in children born to mothers infected with Zika according to a new CDC study. Other Zika related brain abnormalities occurred at 20 times the rate before Zika entered the US.  The study compared the rates of early brain malformations, microcephaly, eye defects and other central nervous system abnormalities from births in 2013, before Zika reached the US, and births in 2016. The study highlights how important it is to prevent Zika infections during pregnancy.
