The first elements of the THAAD (Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense) system have been deployed to South Korea. The system is designed to take out short to medium range missiles and it is stated that the system is being deployed to defend South Korea from a possible North Korean launch. The goal is to have the system fully deployed by the end of 2017. Russia and China have both stated concerns over the implications of such a system so close to their borders. It is believed that the system is being deployed due to the recent ballistic missile tests.
