First Woman to Officially Complete the Boston Marathon Runs Again, 50 Years Later

Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon in 1967, ran in the 2017 Marathon. In 1967 she registered for the race and her gender was not realized until the race already kicked off. Officials attempted to force her to stop running the race; however, her boyfriend helped her avoid officials trying to grab her so that she could finish. She stated that running in the two races, 50 years apart, was “like night and day.” After crossing the finish line her number that she wore in her first race and again in 2017, number 261, was retired from the Marathon.
