This Day in History: Red Baron Killed in Action

On March 21, 1918, the Red Baron, a German Fighter Pilot in World War I, was killed in action. The Baron, whose real name was Manfred von Richtofen, had shot down 80 adversaries in the war. It was considered amazing to have downed 20 aircraft for the time and a pilot needed five confirmed kills to earn the honorific ace.  World War I saw the first usage of planes in combat, and they were made of wood and covered in fabric.
