President Trump presented a Purple Heart medal during his first visit to Walter Reed Military Hospital. The medal was presented to Sgt. 1st Class Alvaro Barrientos, who was wounded in Afghanistan. Trump awarded it saying “When I heard about this I wanted to do it myself. So congratulations on behalf of Melania and myself and the entire nation.” Trump’s verbiage has since faced criticism on the internet for the cavalier attitude with which he has referred to the honor.
The visit comes shortly after the president signed a bill to expand veteran’s care options beyond the VA.
