French Elections Lead to Runoff Between Macron and Le Pen

Sunday’s elections in France resulted in a May 7 runoff election between front runners Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen. Macron won the majority of the vote with 24.01 % and Le Pen came in second with 21.30% with 100% of districts reporting. Fillon and Melenchon, who came in third and fourth respectively, both dropped out of the race.

After the election Le Pen took leave as president of the FN party. Francois Hollande, the current president of France, has endorsed Macron. The PS party has also encouraged voters to vote against Le Pen by voting for Macron.

Polling conducted by Elabe for BFMTV and L’Express  is currently showing that Macron is expected to win in the second election 64% to 36%, with 69% of those polled likely to vote.
