Supreme Court Nomination Hearing Could Alter Senate Rules

It is expected that the senate will vote this week on Judge Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court this week. Currently Democrat leaders are vowing to filibuster the nomination meaning he would need 60 votes in order to get confirmed and break the filibuster. Republican leadership have discussed permanently changing the rules so that it would only take 50 votes for a Supreme Court nomination, a move that could make partisan politics play a bigger role on Supreme Court votes than it has in the past. The Democrats had changed the rules for presidential-level appointments in the cabinet and judicial positions below the Supreme Court level in 2013.
