The NY Times has published a story claiming that FBI Director Comey kept detailed notes and memos related to his conversations with President Trump, some of which are classified. In one reported memo, Director Comey recounted how President Trump requested that Director Comey drop the investigation into Michael Flynn as he was a “good guy” on the day after Flynn resigned. It is reported that Director Comey shared this memo with senior FBI officials after he wrote it due to the nature of the information.
The White House is denying the reports in the Times. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chair of the House Oversight Committee, has requested this reported memo and any others to be sent to his committee by May 24 by the FBI. He also stated he is willing to subpoena the memos if they are not released.
Senator John McCain stated that the situation was approaching “Watergate level” proportions and Senator Lindsey Graham stated that he has invited former Director Comey to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in public. Director Comey had turned down a request to meet in private and is reported to have said he would only testify in public.
