A report from the United Nations condemned the “widespread torture” practiced by police in the nation of Pakistan. The UN stated that the torture took place typically to obtain a confession from someone in custody. The UN urged Pakistan to incorporate a specific definition of torture that can be uniformly applied across the board. Specific cases such as bloggers detained for weeks without charge for discussing extremism as well as individuals who have either died in custody or disappeared were cited as evidence of the torture. The UN stated that Pakistan failed to launch any investigations into these cases.
