Australian Government Plans to Address Sex Tourism

The Australian government plans to revoke the passports of registered child sex offenders in an effort to fight the growing child sex trade industry in Asia. Under the new legislation 20,000 people would be prohibited from leaving the country. Child sex tourists from Australia are very active, particularly in the nearby Southeast Asian countries. The legislation needs to be passed by Parliament.

Approximately 3,200  serious offenders would be banned from traveling outside the country permanently. Less serious offenders would be eligible for removal from the list if they report to the authorities regularly and comply with the law for several years and renew their passports.
