Michael Tate Reed was arrested on charges of defacing objects of public interest, criminal trespass and first-degree criminal mischief on Wednesday after he drove his car into a new Ten Commandments monument in Arkansas. Reed is suspected to have shouted “Freedom!” as he crashed the car into the statue. The statue was located outside of the state Capitol building in Little Rock. The statue had been in place for less than 24 hours and it cost $26,000 which had come from private donations.
State Senator Jason Rapert called the statue’s destruction an “act of violence” and stated a new statue had been ordered. On Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union stated they planned to file a federal lawsuit challenging the monument as an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.
Reed had destroyed a similar statue in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma three years ago.
